IMO they are realizations players came to when they started to play against each other, or got bored with tricking the computer in the same way over and over. They post in that description I linked some what they find to be unbalanced. The PBEM stands for "Play By E-mail", which is how the series first handled Multi-player, and still can. But it is actually called PBEM & Single Player Balance Mod. Others I switch in and out, to try them, mostly. Sometimes another by Triumph that changes the look of class units per race. Personally, I play with a few cosmetic changes. When asked, the Devs have said they are happy with the balance they have created, as a matter of fact. Whereas, I have faith that the devs put a lot of time and effort figuring in probabilities, risk vs reward, and "fun factor" that differenciate/highlight class abilities. Ultimately, Balance was their described goal, but it really is opinion. But what about when you want to play against people who are using the Shadow Magic Mod, or the AOW1 Mod, or the Etc., etc.? They have their own webpage for match-ups, which is great. Later, you can easily switch the mod on and off in the launcher.ĮX: When you want to find someone to multiplayer against, you will also be relegated to only play against those who have the mod install. Then you can better assess what you like and dislike with what they have changed. Alternatively, if in a few months you really want to expand YOUR game play, go ahead and try the "Balance" Mod. If you close yourself off to what a few players decided are the prescribed way to play, you might miss a lot of available great mods. But with a mod, it is much harder to find additions that will be compatible, is one reason. After you learn the game you can better choose what to add to your liking.
